Do We Learn to Earn?

Chapter 5

Grammar Gear: Class 8 (Cambridge University Press)

Collins English Grammar and Composition: Class 6 (Collins India)

“He has all that he could wish for, yet he is unhappy.”
“He has lived a life of luxury and wealth. He has never faced ______. (adverse)”

This thoughtless, instant connection that we form between happiness and material privilege is concerning. Here, the goal should be recognising material privilege whilst acknowledging that it is not essential to be happy. These statements also ignore other social classes like caste, race and gender along which people can be privileged. Lastly, it is dismissive of diverse emotional experiences, urging children to equate material success with happiness.
